EnMauritanie, 150 000 personnes sont encore aujourd’hui considérées comme des esclaves selon l’organisation non gouvernementale Walk Free Foundation.Pourtant, la pratique a été officiellement abolie en 1981. Depuis 2015, elle est même assimilée à un crime contre l’humanité par la justice mauritanienne.
Malgré le renforcement des lois répressives, les associations abolitionnistes dénoncent le manque de volonté du régime mauritanien et la discrimination à l’égard des Noirs du pays qui représenteraient 75 % de la population.
