Entre 2013 et 2014, le trafic de drogue dans le Sahel, notamment de cocaïne, a rapporté 900 millions de dollars, d'après l'Office des Nations unies contre la drogue et le crime(ONUDC).
Pour blanchir leur argent, certains narcotrafiquants investissent dans le bétail. L'élevage fait vivre près de 80% de la population sahélienne.
En achetant des troupeaux entiers, les trafiquants bouleversent l’organisation socio-économique de la région.
